TITLE (FINAL): Limited Edition (1024K Ram Record)

PROJECT OUTLINE (FINAL)

MATERIALS: 7" vinyl record, 3 turntables, editioned artists book (zine style), diagrams (A3 collage on paper, 8 units).

FORMAT: Exhibition/Installation w/ opening performance. ongoing sound.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS: small space to set-up installation of books, records, players and diagrams.(this is very much dependent on site visit and possible areas)

CONCEPT/BACKGROUND: Towards the end of 2008 I made a work involving the production of a 7" vinyl record to accompany a sculpture i was working on. The record was not produced in the timeframe necessary and thus the work had to be presented in an altered form. The complications involved problems/differences regarding the copyright authorisation in Australia vs. the U.S. These issues became a strong conceptual element in the presented work and have since led to further inquiry into the slippages in these areas of control.

I propose to expand/re-present this work in a form that invites playful interaction between work and viewer. A rough, 'zine style' book will be produced that expands on/explains the initial work and it re-presentation, these books will be produced in a free limited edition that audience members can take with them. Several domestic record players (3) will be present in the space, and viewers will be invited to play multiple records at once to generate the sound of the installation. Image based, diagrammatic collages that expand on the initial diagram I created to explain the work will be produced and presented within the space.

The work will address the general themes of the curatorial direction through: Conversing with the systems of authorship/copyright control/industrial production. Embracing a 'self-production' model both through the 'zine' elements and the invited user interaction with the record. Utilising 'low-end', semi-obsolete forms i.e. record, turntable and photocopy zine to steer away from tech-wizardry.

DEVELOPMENTS : A surface to house the three turntables will be constructed from black marine ply , in a long rectangular format. pots (potentiometers) will control individual volume levels creating a simple three deck mixer (scotty c on the wheels of steel), this will be the main 'object' in the space and form the work surface for viewers to interact with the work.

Limited Edition (1024K RAM Record)

A simple idea : Make a vinyl record from a classic heavy metal song.

A convoluted process : Take a midi file of Slayer's 'Angel of Death' and pass it from a cracked version of Ableton Live, through an old drum machine, to an Atari St computer. Record it, and pass it back.

An unforseen malfunction : A bootleg wary vinyl pressing plant in Nashville, Tennessee requires extensive copyright registration process in order to produce record. Record doesn't arrive on time.

An elegant solution: Make a book of the email dialogue, present the system as an austere sculpture in a strobe lit room. Remake at a later date.

....This is the remake.
