Illbient Data City:

Data City is a proposal for a fully intergrated urban design network, utilising user-generated data to create alternative sources of information for shaping the urban environment. Like an urban tag-cloud, sensory experiences and everyday events (e.g. smells, tastes, loves, deaths, emotional responses) and other non-traditional data are uploaded to Data City, creating constantly evolving accessible maps of experience of public space. Outcomes of the project could include predictive planning, real-time simulation of public space and the visualisation of a wide range of unseen urban networks. Through an online discussion, room11 encourages participants of the LCA2009 to contribute ideas and possible platforms through which the project may move into a testing stage.

Data City is an expansion of a theoretical proposal prepared for Critical Visions 08, based off urban proposals for Sydney in the year 2050.

In a Nutshell: WHAT IS THE POTENTIAL OF A DEMOCRATIC DIGITAL URBAN DESIGN NETWORK?

assumptions:

...

1.6 The Internet has been widely explored as a democratic medium, and ubiquitous technology expands participatory potential in forming a constant and expanding definition of the city, it's patterns, its users. The illbient data city expands urban informatics, GIS and geo-referenced imagery, web-based social networking and image sharing technologies, online advocacy and e-commerce, and mass multiplayer roleplay gaming with real-time high definition rendering into an interactive and expandable model of real-time Hobart (or anywhere, for that matter).

1.7 How do we design a city now that we are all connected? The illbient data city becomes a tool for the everyday users of the city to become an active participant in shaping their city. Their own peer-produced, usergenerated propositions, issues, solutions, can be applied and tested on their city. The illbient data city expands the available resources for urban designers, expanding traditional data sets beyond current emerging technologies into a new meta-tool for shaping the city ; the convergence of these once disparate data-sets / disciplines is the grit of illbient city
