Overall Project
- Brief:
- Artists and curators are often compelled by a “sense of place”, however Tasmanian art works and exhibitions too often present this notion as a simplistic, romanticised relationship between artist and the physical landscape. This exhibition aims to subvert this concept by asking questions relating to why people escape their ‘place’ of origin and the effect this has on the wider community. This exhibition aims to explore the migration to and from the state of Tasmania and the effect this migration has on Tasmanian communities do these people ever return and if so, what do they bring with them?
- The overall aim is to give the audience a diverse look at issues concerning emerging artists that have a connection to Tasmania in particular those who explore issues relating to displacement, escape, relocation and personal exploration in relevance to ‘place’.

Aim
The brief has dark, destructive possibilities but this is not of interest - there is far too much doom-and-gloom art around.
Instead, the aim of this project will be to create optimism, hope, goodwill to Burnie's post-industrial decline. How can the town be rejuvenated?
