Audience

  • Conference delegates (main audience)
  • Art community
  • University staff and students
  • General community (minimal except for Open Day)

Curatorial Direction

The central ideas of open source development and communities are:

  • Relinquishment of absolute control
  • Open to community contributions of similarly-aligned individuals
  • Formation of communities
  • Creation of gift economies
  • Relinquishment of property rights - knowledge should be free
  • Favours the use-value of products over financial profit
  • Promotes the role of the individuals in solving larger problems

There are strong correlations with relational visual arts practice:

Open-Source Software Development Relational Visual Arts Practice
Shares control of products with the community The particularities of the site/community serve as as a point of departure
Open to community contributions Directly accepts source material from the public
Relies on the donations from interested parties Relies on participation from the audience
Publishes source code with the product release Reveals the artistic processes to the audience
Projects initiated by individuals Individual artists become a conduit for a social phenomenon

This event aims to generate meaningful connections between the arts and technology communities through the presentation of relational works at the conference venue or at the spin-off events (Open Day, Politics in the Pub, etc.)

Participants are encouraged to:

  • Make work that will be easily accessible to the conference delegates.
  • Incorporate the particularities of the delegation in their work.
  • Directly interact with conference delegates.
  • Make work without technology - the reapplication of open-source ideas would be more clearly communicated without the distraction of technology.

Aims

For artists:

  • Raise awareness in the arts community of open-source communities and the social implications of this philosophy.
  • Provide points of engagement with an otherwise inaccessible unusual and creative community
  • An opportunity to attend the conference

For conference and its delegation:

  • Expand the scope of a typically highly-specialised conference
  • To raise awareness of the social and philosophical implications of the open-source communities

For both:

  • To create points of contact that span the arts, technological and legal communities.
